Timeless Tide

childhood summers by the sea
This piece was inspired by the quiet magic of childhood summers by the sea.
Salt air, sandy toes, shimmering water, and days spent with the people I love.
Here along the New England coast, even the simplest summer days
have a way of becoming the memories we carry with us long after the tide rolls out.

Timeless Tide
Where the Sea Holds Our Summers

Windows down, summer wind tangled softly in our hair.
That salty-sweet air finds us just before the ocean does,
drifting through the windows as we turn the familiar corner toward the beach.
Then the water comes into view, sparkling in the distance,
and little voices rise from the backseat, trying out words like shimmer and ocean.

We carry the bags, buckets, towels, and enough snacks for three little ones and their cousins.
We find our table tucked beneath the shade, leave our things behind, and wander toward the water.

The ocean is scattered with sunlight.
Boats rock gently in the distance.
Children search the shoreline for tiny treasures
while families wade into the cool water.

Tiny footprints lead the way through the sand.
Little hands gather seashells.
Curious eyes search between the rocks for crabs
and tiny creatures hiding just beneath the surface.

Everything feels like a discovery when you are this small.

A shell softened by the sea.
A crab tucked beneath a rock.
A boat drifting across the horizon.
Sunlight dancing like tiny diamonds on the water.

The waves roll in and find our ankles.
Somehow the whole world grows quieter,
as though it has paused for just a moment.

Little fingers point toward the next treasure.
Squeals float across the beach when something new appears.
The morning sun warms our shoulders.
The familiar breeze carries that salty sweetness of summer.

For a little while, there is nowhere else we need to be.

There is something about the ocean
that seems to know how to quiet the world and settle the soul.
I take the pictures because I want to remember.
But already, I know the photographs will never hold all of it.

They won’t hold the sound of their little voices floating on the wind.
The weight of a small hand tucked inside mine.
The delight found in an ordinary seashell.
The way the morning sun catches the red in their hair
as they stand at the edge of something that still feels enormous and full of magic.

They will only be this little for so short a time.
So I am soaking in their summers while I can.

The sandy toes.
The salty hair.
The buckets filled with seashells.
The endless questions.
The quiet wonder of meeting the sea again and again,
as though each visit were the very first.

Someday, these tiny footprints will be washed away.
The buckets will be left behind.
Their hands will no longer be so small inside mine.
And perhaps they will look toward the horizon and simply see the ocean.

But for now, they see magic in every shimmering wave.
And I get to stand beside them,
watching their childhood unfold,
remembering pieces of my own,
while the same timeless tide rolls gently in.
